Ourselves and other animals

In response to our pre-Christmas poll, you told us that you were keen to see a collection of KnowledgeBox and web resources that would help with teaching Ourselves at KS1. Hopefully this collection will save you time and provide you with some ideas for taking this topic off into some interesting areas.

Body parts

The naming of body parts can be great fun if you use the Body parts animation from the KnowledgeBox ScienceBox module and the print activities that go with it. Get all the children to stand up and join in with the character on screen, shaking different parts of the body and naming them.

A great Body parts web resource on the Birmingham Grid for Learning can really help those children in your class who speak English as an additional language. The names of the body parts are translated into five different languages and all you have to do is select the language and click on the body part, to hear how it is pronounced. Great fun even if the language isn’t one spoken by children in your class!

NEW from BBC Active: Find Out About Science

The NEW BBC Active Find Out About Science module has a large number of high quality video clips and on-screen games that can be used throughout a topic on ourselves. There are video clips about our senses, growing older, adults and babies, animals,  living and non-living things, and food. There’s  even an on-screen ‘Simon says…’ game which is great to use after work on naming body parts.

To trial the new  BBC Active Find Out About Science for KS1  module on your KnowledgeBox, call 0800 587 8032 or email enquiries@uk.knowledgebox.com

Feelings

Feelings

Interactive Photo Album: Feelings

An interesting thing to talk about during a topic about Ourselves is feelings. If you use the Interactive Photo Album: Feelings you’ll save yourself the time of searching for photos, and if you use the teacher notes you don’t even have to think up the questions to ask about each photo. It’s all been done for you.

The My day: Interactive Photo Album might also be useful in an Ourselves topic, helping pupils to sequence the things they do each day, and helping them to develop their speaking and listening skills.

Other animals

The video clips in BBC Active’s Find Out About Science are perfect for talking about the features that humans have in common with other animals. A particular favourite of mine is the Almost like us clip which shows chimpanzees searching for food in the jungle. Lots to talk about in this clip and some great close ups of chimpanzee hands and finger nails – fascinating!

KnowledgeBox Search
Type animals into the KnowledgeBox Search and you could get as many as 250 resources, so don’t forget to refine your search using the criteria in the Advanced Search facility.
